Monterey’s old Ocean View Boulevard was once the heart of the area’s fishing industry. Canneries and processing plants lined the waterfront lane in the early 1900s, and the district bustled with workers, boats and whistles signaling the start and end of each shift.
This world inspired John Steinbeck’s acclaimed 1945 novel, Cannery Row. Born in the nearby city of Salinas, Steinbeck patterned some of his most famous stories on the people and places of sardine-era heyday.
Though the industry collapsed after World War II, its legacy lives on. The city of Monterey renamed Ocean View Boulevard as Cannery Row in 1958. A decade later, the opening of the Sardine Factory restaurant sparked a renaissance that’s still going strong.
Sixty years after Cannery Row’s official designation, travelers still explore the sights and sounds of the district that Steinbeck made famous. To view the area through the lens of his novels, start here.
Pacific Biological Laboratories (800 Cannery Row): This small wooden structure near the Monterey Bay Aquarium was where Steinbeck’s real-life friend, marine biologist Ed Ricketts, worked and played. It appears in Cannery Row as Doc’s Lab.
The former Wing Chong Market (835 Cannery Row): Today’s Kristonio’s was once a local market that informed Steinbeck’s depiction of Lee Chong’s Heavenly Flower Grocery, where characters from the novel bought and bargained for supplies.
The former La Ida Cafe (851 Cannery Row): Now a sandwich and snack shop called Austino’s Patisserie, this was once a cafe where the fictional characters Mack and the boys gathered leftover drinks.
Two Steinbeck Plaza sculptures: Near the foot of Prescott Street, the Steinbeck bust and larger Cannery Row Monument honor the district’s personalities. The bronze monument features Ricketts, various fishing industry workers and community fixture Flora Wood, plus four boys modeled after the friends who revived Cannery Row from the 1960s forward: Ted Balestreri, Bert Cutino, George Zarounian and Harry Davidian.
The Ed Ricketts statue: Follow the Monterey Bay Coastal Recreation Trail toward downtown to find a sculpture honoring the late Ed Ricketts, the real-life author of Between Pacific Tides. Ricketts died here in 1948, while crossing former railroad tracks.
Cannery Row is a street set along the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary, in Monterey, California. The waterfront district is named for the 1945 John Steinbeck novel, Cannery Row. Today, this former sardine fishing hub tops the list of Monterey County’s most-visited attractions.
